NRFEMS Assists at Clermont County Fair
Update August 2008

New Richmond Fire and EMS Department was one of several departments providing emergency services during evening events throughout the 2008 Clermont County Fair in Owensville. An engine, ambulance and nine personnel from NRFEMS were on stand-by for the automobile demolition derby on Saturday June 26. Several engine fires were extinguished but fortunately no derby drivers were injured.

NRFEMS Participates in Junior Police Academy

Update July 2008

NRFEMS participated in Clermont County’s Junior Police Academy on July 10, 2008. Hosted by New Richmond Police Department, it is one of four, week long, JPA camps this summer for teenagers throughout the county. It is conducted annually by the Clermont County Sheriff’s Office and Goshen Township Police Department.

Over twenty JPA cadets were introduced to the career of firefighter/emergency medical technician by NRFEMS using activities designed to simulate actual emergencies. Included were the simulated response to an automobile accident, requiring cadets don firefighter, personal protective equipment, operate hydraulic rescue tools to disentangle the “victim” from the wreckage, and prepare him for ambulance transport; a firefighter skill and obstacle course competition where cadets had to properly place ladders, move a “victim,” and perform other duties simulating the work on fire scenes; climbing of the department’s 75 foot aerial ladder; and a water ball competition, designed to teach both teamwork and control of high pressure fire hoses. All evolutions were completed under direct instruction of NRFEMS personnel and safety of camp participants was the highest priority.

Special thanks are extended to Lindale Auto Parts for providing a vehicle and AJAX Towing for moving it to the drill location.

Even Rescue Randy knows to “Click It or Ticket!” This 175 lb. “dummy” is used as the victim during many, fire and rescue trainings. Proper seatbelt use resulted in Randy having only minor injuries the result of his car accident.

With assistance from NRFEMS Deputy Chief Teresa Bender, JPA cadets rolled the accident “victim” into an awaiting ambulance.

In the water ball competition, a large, metal ball attached to a trolley rolls on a steel cable. Similar to “tug of war,” the object is for each team to use a stream of water to push the ball past the opposing. Teams that appoint a spotter (leader) and work together are almost always prove to be the more successful in this competition. New Richmond Purchases New Fire Truck

Update June 2008

The Village purchased a new fire truck in early June. It will put into service later this summer after being properly equipped and completion of driver training by personnel.

The 2008 rescue/engine was purchased from Central States Fire Apparatus with a Community Development Block Grant of $ 125,000 awarded to the Village in 2007 and $ 75,658 in local funds. The State of Ohio’s government purchasing program was utilized to acquire the fire truck at a significantly reduced price.

Designated as “Rescue 36,” the new vehicle replaces a 1985 engine purchased “used” by the Village in 2004 and currently for sale. Most tools, hose and equipment for the new rescue/engine were taken from the retired engine, saving the community thousands of additional dollars.

Features of the new rescue/engine include hydraulic rescue tools (purchased in 2006 with a $ 20,000 federal grant), 10 kW hydraulically operated electric generator, class “A” fire fighting foam, 1250 GPM fire pump, 1000 water tank, and cab seating for five personnel.

New Richmond Fire and EMS Department assisted Pierce Township Fire Department

Update: January 2008

New Richmond Fire and EMS Department assisted Pierce Township Fire Department at the scene of a motor vehicle crash on US 52 in early January. Because the car landed in a deep ravine off the roadway, New Richmond’s aerial ladder truck was used to lift a “stokes” basket containing the patient back onto the road surface to an awaiting ambulance.
