PUBLIC WORKS/PARKS/RECREATION COMMITTEE

 MARCH 11, 2002

Present:  Vinnie Cochran, Patricia Hornschemeier, Marie MacFarland – members; David Kennedy, Administrator; Steve Canter, Richard Warner.

Steve Canter was present to answer questions about the water well field.  A 300 feet ‘isolation space’ needs to surround each well.  The property next to the water treatment plant is going to be needed.

Discussed a water softener for the plant.  Canter suggested using Ionic Exchange with salt.  Cochran asked about using potassium instead.  Canter will report back on Cochran’s suggestion along with costs, etc. on water softening.

Fluoridation was the next topic.  Fluoride would have to be added after the softening process.  The fluoride process requires certification.  Canter is going to check on the requirements for certification and report back.

Hornschemeier and Bobbi Phillips, Utility Clerk, met with a representative of ADT Security at the sewer plant to discuss videotaping of the septage haulers.  Some of the haulers are not paying for their usage.  Committee recommends purchasing this system.

Richard Warner was present to discuss a ‘flow monitoring system’.  This system will monitor the flow through our sewer lines.  This will make it easier to detect where infiltration is happening.  Committee very interested.

Hornschemeier reported that Willow Street between Walnut and Sycamore Streets needs patching.

Kennedy is replacing the sidewalk on Augusta Street from Route 52 to Greenmound Road.

The fire hydrant at Speedway (corner of Sycamore and Columbia Streets) is leaning and appears to be leaking.
